The Supreme Court has recently expandedthe legal definition of document to include documents produced orstored by electronic media, at least for the purposes of criminalalteration of documents and fraud. The case involved a bankemployee who stole money by altering electronically storedaccount information. The Supreme Court upheld the lower court'sruling that this conduct constitutes falsification of commercialdocuments, claiming that documents for these purposes are notonly hard copy documents, but include diskettes, videos, moviesand documents stored on computers.
