This note sets out the circumstances in which a maintained school, an academy or a pupil referral unit may discipline and/or exclude a pupil, the procedure to be followed after exclusion and the parents' right to appeal to an independent review panel if their child is permanently excluded. The note also explains the responsibilities of the head teacher, the principal of an Academy, the governing body and the school Discipline Committee in dealing with exclusions.
