Pilot scheme requiring residential landlords to check tenants' immigration status brought into force

The Immigration Act 2014 (Commencement No. 3, Transitional and Saving Provisions) Order 2014 (SI 2014/2771) brings into force certain provisions of the Immigration Act 2014 (IA 2014) for particular areas of England on 1 December 2014. From that date, the Home Office is piloting the "right to rent" provisions of the IA 2014 in parts of the West Midlands. Property owners in the affected areas must check that someone has the right to live in the United Kingdom before letting a property to them or accepting them as a lodger.
