An introduction to the various forms of contempt of court and a summary of the procedural rules in CPR 81 that relate to them. This includes the procedure relating to committal proceedings for breach of an order or judgment, and making a false statement of truth or false disclosure statement. This note also provides guidance from case law in relation to various forms of contempt.
Note: a new CPR 81 (Applications and proceedings in relation to contempt of court), completely replacing the former CPR 81, is in force from 1 October 2020. PD 81 is revoked and not replaced. See Changes to contempt procedural rules (CPR 81) from 1 October 2020: caution.
