Commission fines Telefonica for illegal margin squeeze

On 4 July 2007, the European Commission announced that it has fined Spanish telecoms operator Telefónica EUR151,875,000 for breach of Article 82 of the EC Treaty. The Commission has found that Telefónica imposed an illegal margin squeeze in the Spanish broadband market between September 2001 and December 2006, by virtue of the prices that it charged its downstream rivals for wholesale broadband access and its own retail tariffs for the provision of broadband services.
