Meet the team who create and maintain our resources

Sophie Capel

Sophie Capel joined Practical Law from Ashurst, where she worked for nearly 11 years. In 1997 she became the first (and later senior) professional support lawyer for the Ashurst employment group, a post that she held until 2004. She was previously at Denton Hall Burgin & Warrens (now SNR Denton), having qualified there in 1990. She is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association, the Industrial Law Society and PEN (the PSL Employment Network). Sophie is head of Employment. Sophie is currently a non-practising solicitor.

James Brown

James Brown qualified as a solicitor in 2004, having trained at Fox Williams. In 2008, James joined the employment team at Capsticks, where he acted primarily for healthcare sector clients. James routinely advised on the whole range of employment law issues and has considerable litigation experience, including regularly appearing in the employment tribunal on behalf of respondents. He has also appeared before the employment appeal tribunal. James joined Practical Law Employment in 2016. He is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Ryan Clarke

Ryan Clarke graduated in 2016 from The University of Warwick. Ryan has since worked for the in-house legal teams at American Express, Barclays and Barclaycard. Ryan joined Thomson Reuters in August 2016 as an Assistant Editor for the Practical Law Employment team.

Sam Gage

Sam Gage trained at Russell Jones & Walker, where she qualified into the criminal department in 1994. In 1995 she joined the employment department at Rowley Ashworth, where she undertook advisory and contentious work for trades unions and their members. Sam moved to Morgan Cole in 2000 before joining the employment department at Nabarro Nathanson in 2001 where, as a senior solicitor, she undertook predominantly contentious work for public and private employers and senior executives. Sam is a Senior Editor and currently a non-practising solicitor.

Sarah Ilyas

Sarah Ilyas trained at Wedlake Bell where she qualified into the Employment department in 2008. In June 2009, she joined Russell Jones & Walker (now Slater & Gordon) where she acted for claimants and undertook a largely contentious workload consisting mainly of discrimination and unfair dismissal cases. She also undertook some general advisory work. She joined Practical Law Employment in June 2013. Sarah is an Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Kate Levy

Kate Levy trained at Hogan Lovells before specialising in employment at Fox where she acted mainly for individuals on both High Court and Employment Tribunal cases. Kate later joined the employment team at Norton Rose Fulbright where she acted mainly for employers on a range of advisory, contentious and corporate support work. Kate joined Practical Law Employment in December 2013. She is an Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Sophie McGuinness

Sophie McGuinness qualified as a solicitor in 2001, training with, and later becoming employment partner, at Sykes Anderson LLP. In 2005 she moved to head up the employment team at Bolt Burdon. Before joining Practical Law Employment in November 2009, she undertook predominantly contentious employment work, mainly acting for senior executives and SMEs. Sophie is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor

Dan Myers

Dan Myers trained at Lawrence Graham LLP, qualifying as a solicitor in 2001. In 2007, he joined the Employment department at Mishcon de Reya where he worked predominantly on contentious matters, acting for both individuals and employers from a wide range of sectors, and working on both High Court and Employment Tribunal cases. He also routinely advised senior executives and SMEs on all aspects of employment law. He joined Practical Law Employment in July 2012. Dan is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Jillian Paton

Jillian Paton trained at DLA Piper before qualifying into the employment department of Scottish firm Morton Fraser in 2008. She has acted for a wide range of clients including individuals, trade unions, public sector and private sector employers. Jillian has considerable litigation experience and is an experienced advocate having appeared for both employers and employees in the employment tribunal. She has also appeared before the employment appeal tribunal. As a practising solicitor she also undertook a wide range of advisory work and routinely advised on senior executive departures. Jillian joined Practical Law Employment in 2015 and is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and the Society of Scottish Lawyers in London. Jillian is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Elanne Pimstone

Elanne Pimstone trained at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and qualified into the corporate department in 1995. In 1997 she joined Harbottle & Lewis, where she specialised in employment law, dealing with predominantly non-contentious and advisory work for employers and individuals. As a senior associate in the employment group she had responsibility for employment know-how and presented a variety of client seminars. Elanne joined Practical Law Employment in August 2004 and is a member of PEN (the PSL Employment Network) and the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA). Elanne also provides support to the employment law working group of the GC100 (the Association of General Counsel and Company Secretaries working in FTSE 100 Companies). Elanne is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Shireen Shaikh

Shireen Shaikh trained as a barrister and completed her pupillage in 1995 at 2-3 Gray's Inn Square. She re-qualified as a solicitor in 2002 and has specialised in employment law since 1996. She has worked at a variety of firms, including as an associate at Reed Smith (now Reed Smith Richards Butler) for five years and as a partner at Wilsons in Salisbury, where she worked until March 2008. Shireen has a lot of advocacy experience, representing clients in the employment tribunal. Clients have included senior individuals, private and listed companies, charities and a public authority. Shireen has lectured widely and provided training on several aspects of employment law. She joined Practical Law Employment in August 2008. Shireen is a Senior Editor and is currently non-practising.

Mark Tarran

Mark Tarran joined Practical Law Employment from employment publishers IDS, where he was a senior researcher, writing for employment law journal IDS Brief, the IDS handbooks and supplements and the web. He qualified as a solicitor in 2000 with Stone King and advised both employers (mainly SMEs) and employees. Mark is an active member of PEN (the PSL Employment Network) and the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA), and is often involved in ELA working parties responding to government consultations. He devised a series of workshops for the ELA Foundation Course in Discrimination Law, and has also contributed to a book, A Parent's Guide to the Law, published by Lawpack in 2009. Mark is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Claire Templeton

Claire Templeton trained at Hobson Audley (now Faegre & Benson) and qualified into the dispute resolution department in 1998. Following secondments to one of its US offices and Viacom (UK) Limited, she joined the employment department of Norton Rose, dealing with predominantly non-contentious and advisory work for employers. She then returned to Faegre & Benson, where she gained wide experience of advising clients on international employment issues. Claire is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.

Gwyneth West

Gwyneth West trained at Simmons & Simmons and qualified into the Employment department there in 2008, where she acted mainly for financial institutions. In November 2010 she joined Collyer Bristow where she advised employers across all sectors, as well as individuals. While in practice Gwyneth routinely advised on the whole range of employment law issues,including contentious, advisory and corporate support work. Gwyneth joined Practical Law Employment in October 2016. She is a Senior Editor and is currently a non-practising solicitor.
