Nature of practice and clients
Nissenbaum Hickey LLC is a boutique, three partner firm which typically handles high value, complex, often international, domestic relations cases. The three partners, each of whom has at least 20 years of experience in family law, frequently appear in court on contested motions and trials. All the while, we make serious attempts to settle cases. We believe that the better we are prepared for trial, the less likely there will be a trial.
Our practice includes all types of domestic relations issues, including pre- and post-nuptial agreements, divorce, asset division, alimony and child support, child custody, modifications, contempt, and enforcement of marital agreements and foreign domestic relations orders. We accept cases in all Massachusetts counties and cases that will be heard in other states. Many cases involve clients with assets in other countries. All assets need to be discovered, identified, and valued.
Custody and removal-of-children cases typically involve parents holding dual citizenships. Most of our international kidnapping cases, including so-called Hague Kidnapping Convention cases, are litigated in a federal, rather than a state, court.
We often represent clients in amicable divorces and counsel them during their mediation. We also represent clients in appellate cases before the Massachusetts Appeals and Supreme Judicial Court and in the US Circuit Court of Appeals (1st circuit).
The partners have widely lectured and written on a wide range of family law and tax-related topics.
