Nature of practice and clients
The most prominent corporate partner at the firm is Eric Scharf, a lawyer with considerable experience and a good reputation in the Costa Rican marketplace; partner Robert van der Putten is equally well recognised, particularly for banking and finance work. For example, in 2013 the firm advised dairy and cheese manufacturer, Corporación Monteverde, in its acquisition from Mexico's Sigma. Van der Putten also works alongside partner Rafael Cañas in real estate matters.
José Schroeder is the partner that leads the litigation and arbitration practice. Javier Escalante has relevant experience in corporate matters, international business and aviation law, as well as an important role in the public sector. Associate Marcela Acosta leads the labour team and Susan Naranjo leads the public and administrative law team. The firm also launched an entertainment law practice, aiming to tap into the wave of development in the field across the region. The firm's IP team has expanded from a small practice focused on trade marks and copyrights to one that also provides a variety of services in the field of technology. For example, the firm has counselled Google on the development of the legal framework for its new products. The firm also has an important trusts practice, and is authorised by the banking authorities to act as a trustee and as a property manager.
